How Connected Accounts Work

Connected Accounts allows the user to process multiple donations and direct the money to different accounts. Let’s go through an example to see how your business can utilise Connected Accounts.

Note: the Connected Accounts used in the example have already been connected to a Campaign. If you are unsure about how to create a Connected Account, click here. For help on how to connect a Stripe Connected Account to a Campaign, click here.

The visionaries behind NPSP+ have created a foundation that helps supply donuts to everyone in Australia. NPSP+ have created multiple Campaigns around Australia and are wanting to use Connected Accounts to direct the funds collected from each Campaign into different Accounts

Just for the moment, let’s note the amount of money in each account and see how donations made to different campaigns will affect these balances.

Meet Stephen. Stephen has heard what the NPSP+ foundation has been doing for people all around Australia, and wants to make a donation. He decided that he wants to donate $350 to the NPSP+ Foundation - VIC Campaign. Let’s hop into NPSP+ to create this donation.

To find out how to process a donation in NPSP+, click here.

The Campaign, NPSP+ Foundation - VIC, is the same Campaign that is linked to the NPSP+ Primary Connected Account. This means that when a Donation is made to the NPSP+ Foundation - VIC Campaign, the funds will be transferred to the NPSP+ Primary Connected Account.

Once the donation has been submitted, an Opportunity (Donation Record) will have been created in the background.

Let’s hop into Stripe now, to see what has happened to the Connected Account that is linked to the Campaign.

The NPSP+ Primary Connected Account now has a balance of $1,570, which includes the $350 donation from Stephen.

To see that the individual donation payment has been received into the Connected Account, click on to the account and scroll down to Activity. Open the Payments tab to find the individual payment.

For the next example, let's see what happens when a donation is made to a different Campaign.

Say hi to David. David has also heard what the NPSP+ foundation has been doing for people all around Australia, and wants to make a donation. He decided that he wants to donate $1,000 to the NPSP+ Foundation - NSW Campaign. Let’s hop back into NPSP+ to create this donation.

To find out how to process a donation, click here.

The Campaign, NPSP+ Foundation - NSW, is the same Campaign that is linked to the NPSP+ Secondary Connected Account. This means that when a donation is made to the NPSP+ Foundation - NSW Campaign, the funds will be transferred to the NPSP+ Secondary Connected Account.

Once the donation has been submitted, an Opportunity (Donation Record) will have been  created in the background.

Now if we jump back into Stripe, we can see that the NPSP+ Secondary Connected Account now has $2,450 which includes David’s $1,000 donation.

This example shows how your business can utilise Stripe’s Connected Accounts and Vertic’s NPSP+ solution.
